Rerooted: Why I’m Writing Our Migration Story

Three years ago, my family and I did something that still surprises people: we left everything familiar in Southern California and moved to Auckland, New Zealand with three kids, a handful of suitcases, and a lot of unanswered questions.

Not because we hated where we came from. But because we wanted something different for our children, and honestly, for ourselves too.

I’m currently writing a book called Rerooted, a memoir about that decision, the years leading up to it, and what it’s really like to start over in another country when you’re not 22, not rich, and not chasing a fantasy, just a better quality of life.

This isn’t a highlight reel version of migration. It’s the anxious Google searches at 2 a.m. The spreadsheets. The fear. The culture shock. The guilt of leaving family. And the unexpected calm of finally feeling safe again.

It’s also about identity, what happens when you love where you’re from, but no longer feel you can stay. About parenting in a culture where kids climb trees, run barefoot, and don’t practice lockdown drills. About learning that “home” isn’t always a place you’re born into, but sometimes a place you choose.

While I’m still writing the book, I realized something important: People aren’t just curious about our story, they’re actively looking for guidance.

That’s why I started Cali Kiwi Consulting, where I offer one-on-one, personalized support for people who are considering the move to New Zealand and want honest, practical information from someone who’s actually done it. No scripts. No sales pitch. Just real conversations about visas, schools, jobs, culture, and what daily life actually feels like here.

And alongside that, I continue my work through Fehrensen Speech, supporting individuals and families who need speech and communication services especially during times of change, transition, and stress, when communication matters most.

Because whether you’re changing countries, careers, or navigating family challenges, you deserve support that’s human, not just procedural.

If you’ve ever found yourself typing: “Safest countries to raise kids” “Is moving overseas worth it?” “Can we really start over?”

Then this book and this journey is for you

I’ll be sharing more chapters, stories, and updates on our YouTube channel Cali Kiwi, and if you want personalized help exploring your own migration options, you can reach me directly at:

We didn’t move because it was easy. We moved because staying was harder.

And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do for your family is choose new soil and start growing again.
